How to get from Cape Town airport to the City Bowl, Waterfront and Atlantic Seaboard
Compare ride-hailing, authorised taxis, prebooked transfers and car hire from Cape Town airport—and why the MyCiTi bus is not an option.

As of 30 October 2026, arrivals at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) should plan to reach central Cape Town by road. Uber or Bolt is the most practical default for many visitors; a prebooked transfer suits a group, special luggage or a managed arrival; the authorised airport taxi service provides a walk-up alternative; and car hire makes sense when the airport transfer begins a wider driving itinerary.
There is no current MyCiTi airport bus to the city. The City of Cape Town suspended the A01 Airport–Civic Centre service from 1 December 2022, and A01 does not appear in MyCiTi’s current route list. MyCiTi still has an old page claiming that airport buses run every 20 minutes; it conflicts with the suspension notice and should not be used as a timetable.
Choose by arrival situation
| If you need… | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| A direct trip for one or two people | Uber or Bolt | The fare and wait can change with demand; you need the app and a data connection |
| Someone assigned to meet your flight | Prebooked transfer or shuttle | Advance booking is required; confirm operating hours and delay arrangements |
| A walk-up ride without an app | Authorised Airport Taxi Services | Confirm the fare or charging basis before leaving |
| Space for a family, several cases or sports equipment | Prebooked larger vehicle | State passenger and luggage details when booking |
| A car for the rest of the trip | Airport car hire | Parking and city driving may outweigh the benefit during a central stay |
Uber or Bolt: the practical default
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the airport operator, lists Uber and Bolt among CPT’s authorised transport operations. Request the car when you are ready to leave the terminal, then follow the directions shown in the app. Bolt says CPT pickup locations can change, so a pickup point copied from an older guide may be wrong.
Before getting in, match the registration, vehicle make and colour, and driver details to the booking. Do not follow somebody in arrivals who claims to be your app driver: ACSA specifically advises passengers not to accept rides from unsolicited taxi or shuttle drivers.
Enter the full accommodation name and street address rather than “Cape Town city centre.” These destinations are not interchangeable:
- City Bowl: the CBD, Gardens, Oranjezicht and Tamboerskloof are around the central city.
- V&A Waterfront and Green Point: these lie beyond or around the CBD approach.
- Sea Point and Camps Bay: these are farther along the Atlantic Seaboard, so the road journey continues beyond central Cape Town.
Use the live app quote rather than a fare from a blog or forum. Bolt says its airport prices and pickup waits can vary with traffic, demand and other conditions.
Prebooked transfer or shuttle: for a managed arrival
A booked transfer avoids arranging a ride after baggage claim. It is useful when the party needs a larger vehicle, a child seat or space for surfboards, golf bags or several large cases. It can also simplify a late arrival, provided the operator has confirmed that it will meet that flight.
Before paying, check:
- whether the quote covers the vehicle or each passenger;
- how much waiting time is included;
- what happens if the flight is delayed;
- the exact meeting point and identifying sign;
- passenger and luggage capacity;
- any child-seat requirement;
- operating hours and any parking or late-night charge.
ACSA says shuttle representatives meet booked passengers from the arrivals terminals and that shuttles use the international inner lane. Its authorised transport list is a useful starting point when checking an operator.
Authorised airport taxi: the walk-up option
Visitors who do not want to use an app can arrange a cab at the airport. ACSA says authorised taxi companies provide walk-up service from the transport kiosks and domestic-arrivals desk in the Central Terminal Building. The airport’s listing gives Authorised Airport Taxi Services operating hours of 5am to midnight.
Use the marked desk rather than accepting an unsolicited offer in the terminal. Give the complete destination—particularly for Sea Point or Camps Bay—and ask whether the trip is metered or quoted. Confirm the amount or rate and accepted payment method before setting off.
Car hire: choose it for the wider itinerary
Hiring a car at CPT can be sensible when the next part of the trip requires one. It is less compelling purely as an airport transfer for a short City Bowl or Waterfront stay, where accommodation parking and an idle vehicle can add cost.
ACSA lists nine rental agencies at the airport. Their facilities are in front of the Transport Plaza and Central Terminal Building, reached through pedestrian subways on either side of the terminal.
Book ahead if vehicle size or transmission matters. Before choosing on headline price, check the deposit, insurance excess, fuel rule, after-hours procedure and parking at the accommodation. South Africa drives on the left.
Allow for traffic and the final destination
Every option above uses the road network from the airport towards central Cape Town. The vehicle type does not remove the risk of congestion, and a City Bowl address is not the same journey as the Waterfront, Sea Point or Camps Bay.
For a normal arrival with mobile data, compare Uber and Bolt after collecting luggage and follow the app to the indicated pickup point. Prebook when a named driver, a larger vehicle or special equipment matters. Use the authorised taxi desk for a walk-up ride. Rent only when a car fits the rest of the itinerary—and do not plan around the suspended MyCiTi A01 airport bus.
